TARA Food Pantry awarded Community Food Grant

The TARA Food Pantry will receive a grant to connect community members with more Colorado-grown produce and nutrient-dense foods.

It is one of 83 food pantries to be awarded 2024-2025 funding from the state of Colorado.

“We are so pleased to receive this grant to continue to keep the TARA Food Pantry sustainable. We will be able to purchase local meats, eggs and produce with this grant. This not only supports us but our entire community benefits,” said Susan Halkin.

Earlier this year, the state legislature’s Joint Budget Committee and Gov. Jared Polis allocated $3 million in funding for food assistance over the next five years through House Bill 2024-1407. The Colorado Blueprint to End Hunger administers the grant program, in partnership with the Colorado Department of Human Services.

The Community Food Grants program provides funding to qualifying food pantries and food banks, specifically for the procurement and distribution of healthy, culturally relevant foods, while also championing local agriculture. With these funds, food pantries like the TARA Food Pantry can acquire and distribute food directly to individuals and families as aligned with community needs and priorities.

“Food pantries are key partners in addressing hunger in their local communities,” shared Joel McClurg, executive director of systems for the Colorado Blueprint to End Hunger. “And this state funding invests in local solutions to local problems so that everyone can access the food they choose, where they want it and when they need it.”

Grants are intended to purchase dairy and fresh produce from local farmers, ranchers and producers. They also aim to expand access to foods that meet the diverse tastes and needs of community members based on their cultural identity and/or spirituality.

The TARA Food Pantry expresses sincere thanks to all involved in this grant along with our other many partners.

The TARA Food Pantry is located at 333 Milton Lane inside of the TARA Community Center’s lower level in Arboles. It is open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Families do not need to qualify to participate in this community program.
